SunSation! Ladies Mounted Drill Team was formed in
October of 1998. We are made up of a diverse group of
ladies. Riding experience ranges anywhere from a
lifetime of riding to just a few years. We have riders
as young as 13 and riders who are grandma’s. Our
horses are just as diverse in size, color, and
personalities. We have Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses,
Arabs, and mixed breed horses. Not all horses are cut
out to do drill, so horses are monitored for their
first year on the team. Within that time, if they show
signs of aggression towards other horses or people,
they are not allowed to be on the team.
SunSation!emphasizes the importance of horse and rider safety first and foremost. We start new horse and rider combinations out in what is called a quad team. This is a team of 4 riders that compete in competitions in Washington and Oregon. This gives both horse and rider the opportunity to learn about the sport of drill and it gets the horse accustomed to some of our maneuvers while working in close proximity to other horses. Each quad team puts together their own costumes and picks their own music.
Riding in this drill team is not only a great
opportunity to bond with our horses but it’s an
incredible opportunity to make lasting friendships.
Drill team is an amazing way to gain self-confidence,
develop your riding skills, and become more active.
SunSation! participates in rodeos, parades and
competitions throughout the Pacific Northwest.
